Weather and seasons in Las Terrenas: rain, hurricanes and whales

Checked on October 2, 2026

Las Terrenas has a tropical climate all year round, but when you arrive affects the rain you get, how you prepare and sometimes the rent. This guide brings together what our sources say, checked on 2 October 2026, and points out where they disagree.

Temperatures

According to modeled data from Weather Spark, summer (June to August) daytime highs are around 30 °C (86–87 °F) with lows around 24–25 °C. In late January, the coolest time of year, the typical range is about 22 to 27 °C.

Rain: the sources disagree

It rains in every month and there is no true dry season. Which months are wettest is less clear:

  • one modeled climate dataset puts the peaks in May and in October–November, with February and March drier;
  • another source gives September as the wettest month for Samaná;
  • we found no INDOMET station averages for Las Terrenas.

In short: showers are possible all year, often heavier in late spring and in the fall. If your dates depend on it, check the forecasts closer to your arrival.

Heavy rain can also affect services. In April 2024, it damaged the main aqueduct infrastructure and Las Terrenas ran short of water; the authorities sent tanker trucks.

Hurricane season: 1 June to 30 November

  • The official Atlantic hurricane season, as announced by INDOMET (the Dominican Meteorological Institute, formerly ONAMET), runs from 1 June to 30 November.
  • For 2026, INDOMET relayed forecasts of a slightly below-normal season (about 13 named storms), while stressing that a single system can cause major damage.
  • Follow official alerts at indomet.gob.do.

If you rent during this period, ask the landlord: how are doors and windows protected in a storm? Is there backup power and a water reserve? What happens to the rent if the home becomes uninhabitable? Get the answers in writing.

Whale season

The official humpback whale watching season in Samaná Bay ran from 15 January to 31 March 2026, according to the Ministry of Environment, which issued 46 environmental permits for whale watching. Dates are set each year, so check them for the next season.

High season and rents

Travel guides describe December to April as the driest, sunniest period and the high tourist season, when short-stay demand and prices are at their highest. It overlaps with whale season.

Some listings reflect this:

  • in our initial catalog (listings seen on 2 October 2026), a villa in Las Ballenas was advertised at US$1,800 a month in low season and US$2,200 in high season;
  • one listing of uncertain date defined its high season as 1 December to 15 April, which shows that each advertiser uses its own dates;
  • most listings gave a single monthly rent with no seasonal difference.
Period What to keep in mind
December to April High tourist season; some rents go up
15 January to 31 March (2026) Official whale season in Samaná Bay
1 June to 30 November Hurricane season
All year Showers possible; wettest months uncertain

If your stay starts in low season and runs into high season, ask whether the rent changes during the lease and get the answer in writing. For more, see the guides to monthly rentals, the cost of living and electricity and power cuts.
