Electricity and power cuts in Las Terrenas: what to know before you rent
Checked on October 2, 2026
Electricity is one of the things worth clearing up before you rent in Las Terrenas: it affects your comfort, your ability to work remotely and your monthly costs. This guide separates what official sources say from what residents and third-party guides report. Information checked on 2 October 2026.
Who supplies electricity
- In Las Terrenas, as in Las Galeras, power is not distributed directly by Edenorte. Distribution is a concession held by a private company, Compañía de Luz y Fuerza de Las Terrenas, S.A., according to the government's Supérate program.
- Tariffs for Luz y Fuerza's regulated customers are set by the Superintendencia de Electricidad (SIE), usually by quarterly resolution. For example, Resolution SIE-054-2026-TF set the tariffs for May to July 2026. We could not see the current per-kWh amounts; check the SIE tariffs page.
- The boundary shifts towards El Limón: the SIE ordered Luz y Fuerza to withdraw from El Progreso del Limón, which belongs to Edenorte's concession. A house in the hills towards El Limón may therefore be on Edenorte rather than Luz y Fuerza, so ask.
Meter, contract and bill
According to the Luz y Fuerza FAQ and billing page:
- The company bills monthly based on a meter, either analog or digital. You can ask for an analog meter to be swapped for a digital one for RD$500, added to the next bill.
- To open a contract you need a document proving ownership or tenancy (such as a lease) and ID; foreigners provide a copy of their passport or legal residency.
- There is no fixed contract deposit. Instead, the customer pays a deposit equal to two months of consumption, estimated from their electrical appliances, which is refunded when the contract is cancelled.
- Bills can be paid online with the contract number.
In listings, electricity is usually extra and metered, or simply not mentioned: of the 27 listings with a monthly rent in US dollars in our initial catalog (seen on 2 October 2026), 3 said so explicitly and most said nothing. Get it in writing whose name the electricity contract is in, how the meter is read and when the bill is paid.
Power cuts: documented versus anecdotal
- Documented in the press: Las Terrenas has had area-wide blackouts caused by faults on the interconnection line (the Sánchez line) that feeds the area. One newspaper described a failure that "paralyzed" Las Terrenas.
- Anecdotal: expat guides describe frequent cuts, several times a week, lasting from minutes to hours. We found no official outage statistics for Luz y Fuerza, so we cannot confirm how often this happens.
Backup options
| Option | What sources say | Certainty |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter with batteries | Expat guides call it a basic need; it typically runs lights, fans and internet, but not air conditioning | Anecdotal |
| Generator | Mentioned in 1 of the 27 listings in our catalog; no data on fuel use or cost | A single listing |
| Solar panels | A distributed generation regulation published on 19 January 2026 applies to all distributors, including Luz y Fuerza, and keeps net metering | Press report, to be confirmed |
None of the 27 listings mentioned an inverter or solar panels. That does not mean the homes have none: you need to ask. For remote work, the same expat guides recommend putting the router on a UPS.
Questions to ask before signing
- Which distributor serves the home: Luz y Fuerza or Edenorte?
- Is electricity included or extra? Whose name is the contract in?
- Is the meter analog or digital? Who reads it, and when?
- Is there an inverter, batteries, a generator or solar panels? What do they power: air conditioning, fridge, water pump, router? For how many hours?
- If there is a generator, who pays for fuel and maintenance?
- How much were the electricity bills over the last few months? Ask to see recent bills if possible.
- If the inverter or batteries fail, who pays for the repair?
Write the answers into the lease: see the guide to deposits and lease agreements. For how outages affect your connection, read the guide to internet and remote work, and for budgeting, the guide to the cost of living.
