Moving to Las Terrenas for a few months: a practical guide
Checked on October 2, 2026
Las Terrenas is a small coastal town on the Samaná peninsula, in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. This guide covers the basics for anyone coming to live here for one to twelve months: choosing an area, getting there, deciding whether you need a car, and what to check in a home before you commit. Information was checked on 2 October 2026; where a topic is poorly documented, we say so.
Choosing an area: a quick overview
The town stretches along several beaches. Broadly speaking, based on travel guides and real-estate sources (worth checking on the ground):
- Town center: the most walkable area, with supermarkets, banks, pharmacies and clinics around Calle Duarte.
- Pueblo de los Pescadores: a pedestrian strip of restaurants and bars facing Las Ballenas beach. The official tourism site calls it the heart of the nightlife: lively, and noisy at night.
- Las Ballenas: a calmer residential area west of the center, close to shops and restaurants.
- Punta Popy: a lively beachfront east of the center, with many condo buildings and most things within a short walk.
- Playa Bonita: about 3 km west of town, quiet, with few services of its own. You cannot walk there along the beach from the center; you have to use the inland roads.
- Cosón: the most remote area, with a beach several kilometers long; homes are roughly 10 to 20 minutes by car from town.
- El Portillo: about 10 minutes' drive east along the El Limón road; quiet, with a long beach and few services.
There is more detail on our neighborhoods page.
Getting there
- Samaná El Catey airport (AZS): the closest, roughly 23 to 25 km from Las Terrenas, or about 30 to 35 minutes by car according to the sources we checked.
- From Santo Domingo: take the Autopista del Nordeste, then the Boulevard Turístico del Atlántico; both are toll roads. Allow about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on where you start and on traffic.
- Many travelers also compare Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Puerto Plata (POP) airports. Compare transfer times before booking your flight.
Car or no car?
It mostly depends on where you live. In the center, Pueblo de los Pescadores, Las Ballenas or Punta Popy, much of daily life can be done on foot. For Cosón, Playa Bonita, El Portillo or the hills towards El Limón, sources agree that a vehicle is practically essential.
The Las Terrenas–El Limón road climbs a steep range with many bends (according to a 2015 blog; conditions may have changed). We found no reliable data on the state of every inland road, so ask the landlord how the property is reached, especially in the rain.
What to check in a rental
Power and backup
Electricity in Las Terrenas is not supplied by Edenorte but by a private concession holder, Compañía de Luz y Fuerza de Las Terrenas; towards El Limón, some homes may be on Edenorte's network. The press has reported area-wide blackouts caused by faults on the line that feeds the town, and expat guides treat an inverter with batteries as a basic need (anecdotal source). Ask whether there is an inverter, a generator or solar panels, and what they power. See our guide to electricity and power cuts.
Water
Public water in the province is run by INAPA. In April 2024, heavy rain damaged the aqueduct and Las Terrenas had a supply shortfall, covered by tanker trucks. Expat guides say tap water is not for drinking and that a good rental has a cistern and pump (anecdotal source). Ask whether the home has a cistern, how it is filled and who pays for water.
Internet
Claro advertises fiber in several sectors of Las Terrenas, but coverage has to be confirmed address by address. Ask for a screenshot of a speed test run in the home, and ask about a backup connection. See the guide to internet and remote work.
Your first weeks: a checklist
- View the home, or have it checked, before paying any advance.
- Sign a written lease and do an inventory with photos when you move in.
- Agree who pays for electricity, water, gas, internet and building fees, and how the meter is read.
- If the electricity contract is in your name, Luz y Fuerza asks for proof of tenancy (such as the lease) and a copy of your passport or residency card.
- Test the internet at the times you actually work, and during a power cut.
- Find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy and clinic.
- Check your stay conditions on the official site of the General Directorate of Migration: the Tourist Card covers a 30-day stay, which can be extended under certain conditions.
- If you arrive between June and November, keep the hurricane season in mind (1 June to 30 November, according to INDOMET).
