Internet and remote work in Las Terrenas: how to check a connection

Checked on October 2, 2026

If you work remotely, your connection matters as much as your location. Las Terrenas has fiber in some sectors, satellite internet and mobile networks, but we found no reliable data on the speeds people actually get in town. So this guide gives no speed figures; instead, it explains what to check. Information checked on 2 October 2026.

Fiber: coverage by sector

According to Claro's fiber coverage page (seen through a search summary), these Las Terrenas sectors are listed as having fiber to the home:

  • Abra Grande
  • El Cosón
  • El Hospital
  • La Ceiba
  • Las Terrenas Centro
  • Las Terrenas
  • La Guásuma
  • La Barbacoa

A sector being on the list does not mean a given street or house is connected; coverage has to be confirmed address by address with Claro. Altice also sells fiber nationwide, but we could not confirm its coverage in Las Terrenas. Expat forums mention local providers too; we have not verified their coverage either.

Satellite internet

  • Starlink is licensed in the Dominican Republic: INDOTEL processed a concession request from Starlink Dominican Republic S.R.L. in 2022, and the service has been available in the country since July 2022, according to Diario Libre.
  • In July 2025, Diario Libre reported that direct-to-cell satellite internet would be switched on for compatible phones. We do not know how it performs in Las Terrenas today, so check with your carrier.

In our initial catalog, one residence in the town center advertised Starlink included in the rent. If a home has a dish, ask whose name the subscription is in and whether the cost is included.

Mobile data as a backup

We found no verified data on mobile coverage by area in Las Terrenas. If you plan to use your phone as a hotspot backup, test it in the home itself, in several rooms and at different times of day, with the SIM card you will actually use.

How to check a rental's connection

Listings rarely say much: of the 27 listings with a monthly rent in US dollars in our initial catalog (seen on 2 October 2026), only 4 stated the type of connection and none stated a speed. Before you commit:

  1. Ask for a speed test screenshot taken in the home, with the date and time visible, ideally from where you will work and at a busy time of day.
  2. Ask what kind of connection it is (fiber, satellite or other) and who the provider is.
  3. Ask what happens during a power cut: are the router and dish on an inverter or a UPS? Expat guides recommend a UPS for the router (anecdotal source).
  4. Ask about a backup: is there a second connection? The same guides suggest pairing fiber with another connection.
  5. Agree who pays for internet, and whether you can set up your own service.
  6. Run your own test when you visit, or ask someone you trust to do it.
What to ask for Why
Dated speed test screenshot To see the real connection, not the advertised one
Connection type and provider To know whether it is fiber, satellite or something else
Backup power for the router To stay online during power cuts
A second connection So you can keep working if one fails

If remote work is essential for you

  • Prioritize homes with fiber confirmed at the address and backup power.
  • Mention it in your request so our team can ask the advertiser about the connection. Casa Terrenas does not measure speeds itself, so the screenshot and your own test remain the reference.
  • Also read the guide to electricity and power cuts and the guide to moving to Las Terrenas.

Once you know what you need, send your search through the request form.
