Atmosphere

Las Ballenas is an established residential area with villas, apartments and small developments. Local real-estate guides describe it as more residential and calmer than Punta Popy and the centre, while still close to restaurants, shops and services. Its east end faces Pueblo de los Pescadores, the pedestrian restaurant and bar strip, where music plays late: if you want quiet, ask how far the home is from it.

Beach

Playa Las Ballenas ("Whale Beach") is named after rock islets said to look like breaching whales. It is a long, family-friendly beach with reefs for snorkelling. Pueblo de los Pescadores faces it.

Shops and services

The centre is close by: banks, pharmacies, the supermarket and a clinic cluster on Calle Duarte. From the east end of the area you can walk to the restaurants and bars of Pueblo de los Pescadores. If the home is further west, a vehicle can be handy for big shopping trips.

Internet and electricity

Las Ballenas does not appear by that name on the list of Claro fibre sectors we checked, which does include "Las Terrenas Centro" and other sectors of the municipality. Coverage is defined by sector, so check the exact address or ask whether the home already has fibre installed. As everywhere in Las Terrenas, electricity is distributed by Luz y Fuerza de Las Terrenas and there have been outages caused by faults on the interconnection line; ask whether there is an inverter or a generator. Las Ballenas suits families and anyone who wants the beach and services nearby without living in the heart of the nightlife. It sits between the calm of Cosón and the buzz of Pueblo de los Pescadores.
