Atmosphere

El Portillo is a quiet, low-density residential area, popular with foreign residents according to local real-estate guides. It has none of the bustle of the centre: it is a place for a calm life next to a wide, uncrowded beach.

Beach

Playa El Portillo is one of the longest and least crowded beaches in Las Terrenas, running more than 5 km east towards El Limón and lined with palms. There are hardly any bars, restaurants or vendors, apart from a large all-inclusive resort.

Getting around

El Portillo is about 10 minutes' drive east of the centre. From the centre, follow Calle Duarte south-east to the junction with the El Limón road, then turn east. With few services near the beach, and banks, pharmacies and the supermarket in the centre, a vehicle is advisable. The area is built around a small airfield: Wikipedia says it ceased operations in 2012, while another source mentions private flights, so its current status is unconfirmed.

Electricity and internet

Las Terrenas gets its electricity from Luz y Fuerza de Las Terrenas, a private company, but the boundary with Edenorte lies towards El Limón: the electricity regulator (SIE) ordered Luz y Fuerza to withdraw from El Progreso del Limón, an area in Edenorte's concession. If the home is far to the east, ask which distributor supplies it and whose name the account is in. El Portillo does not appear by that name on the list of Claro fibre sectors we checked; verify the connection at the exact address before signing. More in our guide to electricity and power cuts.

Who is it for?

Families and long-stay residents with a vehicle who value calm and an uncrowded beach. If you would rather do everything on foot, the town centre or Punta Popy will be more practical.
